INDIVIDUAL NEEDS
At Woodlands School we are very aware that all pupils are unique and therefore where possible need to be treated as individuals. In Year 7 pupils are placed in mixed ability groups except in Mathematics, History, Geography and Science where they are placed in sets based on ability. In Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 pupils are setted on ability in Mathematics, Languages, History, Geography and Science.
Pupils of all abilities are able to participate in our comprehensive programme of extension classes. We run special courses for gifted pupils as well as ensuring that the work given to pupils always challenges and stretches them.
Special needs of pupils are the responsibility of a Deputy Head who works with the Head of Learning Development and a team of staff to ensure that all pupils are able to achieve their full potential. The Learning Development Team work with both pupils and staff to provide maximum access, for all pupils, to the school curriculum and activities. In response to the diversity of learning, emotional and physical needs of pupils, a range of support is available through:
- In-class support from a Learning Development tutor.
- Targeted withdrawal for negotiated periods of time for individual programmes of work.
- Extra support in the classroom from subject specialistsExtra support from Teacher Assistants.
- Parental and peer support.
- Advice from external agencies.
- Clubs and support groups at lunchtime, after school and during school holidays.
- Specialised equipment
- Literacy and numeracy programmes
Above all, we encourage maximum participation by parents as valued partners in the education of their youngsters.
